Steam cleaning (DOFF)
DOFF steam cleaning uses superheated water at low pressure to lift dirt, paint and growth off brick and stone. It’s one of the gentlest ways to clean a period facade, with no harsh blasting.
Old brick and stone have a soft outer face that protects the material behind it. High-pressure washing and abrasive blasting can strip that face away, leaving bricks that weather badly afterwards. DOFF works differently: very hot water at low pressure softens and lifts dirt and coatings so they can be rinsed off, without scouring the surface.
It’s well suited to London grime and soot, algae and moss, old paint, and chewing gum and graffiti. Because it relies on heat rather than chemicals, it’s a clean method to use around gardens, pavements and neighbours.
Cleaning is often the first stage of a bigger job. Once the dirt is off, failed joints and damaged bricks are much easier to see, so it’s a natural lead-in to repointing and brick restoration. I’ll test an area first so you can see the result before the full job.
